1 Kings 5-6

Chapter 5 (partial)

[Please note that the Tanakh's "5:26" is comparable to "5:12" in most English translations. For comparative study purposes the traditional English verse numbers are printed in parenthesis.]

26 (5:12) Mar-Yah gave wisdom to Shlimon*, as he had promised him; and there was peace between Hiram and Shlimon; and both of them made a treaty together.

27 (5:13) King Shlimon raised a tax out of all Yisrael*; and the tax was thirty thousand men.

28 (5:14) He sent them to Lebanon, ten thousand a month by courses; a month they were in Lebanon, and two months at home; and Adoniram was over the men subject to the tax*.

29 (5:15) Shlimon had seventy thousand who bore burdens, and eighty thousand who were stone cutters in the mountains;

30 (5:16) besides the chief officers* of Shlimon who were over the work, three thousand and three hundred, who bore rule over the people who laboured in the work.

31 (5:17) The king ordered, and they cut out great stones, which were costly stones, to lay the foundation of the house with worked stone.

32 (5:18) And the builders of Shlimon and the builders of Hiram and the Gebalites cut them, and prepared the timber and the stones to construct the house.

Chapter 6 (partial)

1 It happened in the four hundred and eightieth year after the B'nai Yisrael had come out of the land of Mitzrayim*, in the fourth year of the reign of Shlimon over Yisrael, in the second month*, that he began to construct the house of Mar-Yah.

2 The house which king Shlimon constructed for Mar-Yah, its length was sixty cubits, and its breadth twenty, and its height thirty cubits.

3 The portico before the temple of the house, twenty cubits was its length, according to the breadth of the house. Ten cubits was its breadth before the house.

4 For the house he made windows with small openings.

5 Against the wall of the house he constructed stories all around, against the walls of the house all around, both of the temple and of the shrine room*; and he made side rooms all around.

6 The lowest story was five cubits broad, and the middle was six cubits broad, and the third was seven cubits broad; for on the outside he made offsets in the wall of the house all around, that the beams should not have hold in the walls of the house.

7 The house, when it was in building, was constructed of stone prepared at the quarry; and there was neither hammer nor axe nor any tool of iron heard in the house, while it was under construction.

8 The door for the middle side rooms was in the right side of the house: and they went up by winding stairs into the middle story, and out of the middle into the third.

9 So he constructed the house, and completed it; and he covered the house with beams and planks of cedar.

10 He constructed the stories against all the house, each five cubits high: and they rested on the house with timber of cedar.

11 Then the word of Mar-Yah came to Shlimon, saying,

12 "Concerning this house which you are constructing, if you will walk in my statutes, and execute my ordinances, and keep all my mitzvoth* to walk in them; then will I establish my word with you, which I spoke to David your father.

13 I will dwell among the B'nai Yisrael*, and will not forsake my people Yisrael."
